This item is a beautifully hand carved heavy hardwood figure depicting an elephant that my mother purchased at a Hindu shop on Front Street in Colon, Panama back in the early 1960s. My father was a Panama Canal Pilot on the Atlantic side of the isthmus and my mother would frequently purchase art items like this to decorate our home. This elephant figure is incredible. Please look at the photo below to see the ivory eyes and tusks and the detail in the head and trunk. There are no major defects. These are not grade B tourist pieces, but fine carvings made more than 40 years ago by members of a small group of Chinese who have inhabited Panama since the construction of the Panama Railroad in the 1850s. Length = 16 cm ; Weight = 470 gm
