This item is a very large Pre-Columbian Chancay Weaver's Basket, made out of indigenous reeds and stiffening boards. The reeds are woven in a beautiful pattern around stiff wooden boards that add structural rigidity. The Chancay culture from Northern Peru flourished between 900 AD and 1532 AD. This basket is from the latter half of the Chancay period with an estimated dating of between 1100 AD - 1450 AD. This basket is in very good condition, except that the bottom front seam has failed. You can see one of the stiffening boards at the seam failure location in the photo below. When the basket is resting flat, it is difficult to see the failure, so the basket does display well. Length = 43 cm ; Width = 25 cm ; Height = 16 cm ; Weight = 730 gm
