Item BR14
Bakwood Boomerangs is a commercial supplier of quality
boomerang products in the UK. For many years, the owners
were Howard Baker. Howard's nephew, Adrian Green, worked
with him and continued the Bakwoods after Howard's death. He
supplied booms to David Jones and then the whole business
was assumed by Richard Ogilvy under the Davro label. Most of
the Bakwood strip laminated boomerangs were made out of
strip laminated Ash, but sometimes other hardwoods were
used. There were two primary trip laminated models, one
large and one small. Although heavy, these were generally
good flyers. The earliest examples from this manufacturer
are good collectables. This pair of very early strip laminated traditional
boomerangs were purchased in a sporting goods store in
England in the 1980s. They are much older than that as the
store manager did not have them out on display and had to
dig around in back to find them when a customer asked if he
had any boomerangs for sale. These are the Bakwood 51 model
with a span of 51 cm. They both have stamps on the upper
surface that say "Bakwood" as well as a kangaroo and a pair
of trees. One has remnants of paper labels that had been
glued onto the upper surface and then partially removed.
This one also has a label with the name of the store. Both
are in very good condition. I have tested both and they are
terrific flyers, even after decades of not being used. The
flight range is about 25 metres.
