David Schumm made longer range sports boomerangs in the 1970s. He lived in the Washington, D.C. area and went to all of the Smithsonian boomerang events. His best known product was the Downington Hook, a very large hook that had a shape similar to Herb Smith's Big Red Hook, but unweighted and usually stained and not painted. I purchased a left handed Downington Hook from the Boomerang Man in 1977 and it was a fantastic flyer with a range of 50-60 yards. I am not sure why the hook was called the Downington. That is the name of the town where Al Gerhards lives.

This boomerang is one of David Schumm's famous Downington Hooks. This is a very large boomerang by today's standards. It is signed and dated 1979. Ben Ruhe brought this hook to the Europe v.s. USA Challenge Match in June, 1987 and used it as a signature boomerang. Some of the signatures include: Ben Ruhe, Jim Mayfield, Doug DuFresne, Gary Broadbent, Chet & Carmen Snouffer, Olivier Vouktchevitch, Jacques Sabine, Mark Legg, Paul Sprague, Volker Behrens and Gary Lamothe. This boomerang is in excellent condition.
