Eric Darnell's tri-Flys made out of Exotic Materials for Competition

triFlys made out of exotic materials like Nylon and ABS can be found on the Low Cost Boomerang link. Advanced competitors carve these into a variety of Fast Catch, Trick Catch or Doubling competition models. Plans for modifying triflys can be found on Pierre Kutek's triFly web site.

G12 Tri-blader by Volker Behrens
Price: $62 ; Availability: 9 RH + 2 LH

This tri-blader was made out of 2 mm G12. It is a clean and pragmatic solution for windy and gusty days in Australian Round, Trick Catch or Consecutive Catch. It has a higher, circular flight and it does not get bounced around or carried away by freak winds. It is predictable and an easy catch. Experimental Polypropylene proFly by Eric Darnell
Item LRP24 ; Price: $20 ; Availability: 1 RH

This is an early experimental variation (1985?) of the popular Darnell proFly or Wizard. The plastic is a very dense form of Polypropylene, giving it more weight and a range of 45+ metres. The plastic injection molding flow is discolored at the outer elbow, edge, but it is in excellent condition. Needs some wind for a complete return as expected.
Span = 35 cm ; Weight = 104 gm ; Range = 45-50 metres ; Age = 14+ ; Power = 7/10 ; Difficulty = 6/10 ; Right Handed Only

Modified ABS Wizard by Eric Darnell
Item LRP26 ; Price: $20 ; Availability: 1 RH

This is a modified ABS Darnell Wizard. The creme colored ABS plastic is denser than Polypropylene, giving it more weight and a range of 45+ metres. The blades were narrowed slightly to improve performance. A coin weight was added to the dingle arm with tape. Needs a hard low throw for best results and is a very nice flyer in light winds.
Span = 34 cm ; Weight = 84 gm ; Range = 45-50 metres ; Age = 14+ ; Power = 7/10 ; Difficulty = 5/10 ; Right Handed Only

Modified Polypropylene Wizard by Eric Darnell
Item LRP27 ; Price: $20 ; Availability: 1 RH

This is a modified Darnell PolypropyleneWizard. The blades were narrowed to improve performance. A coin weight was added to the lift arm with tape to extend range to 40 metres. It likes a hard low throw for best results and is a very good flyer in light to moderate winds.
Span = 34 cm ; Weight = 64 gm ; Range = 40 metres ; Age = 14+ ; Power = 7/10 ; Difficulty = 5/10 ; Right Handed Only

RH Competition Boomerangs Modified by Larry Ruhf

All of the boomerangs listed below were made or modified by Larry Ruhf in the mid 1980s for use in competition. Most of these have a range of 30-50 metres and were made for use in Australian Round or in team events, such as Position. Competition is usually held in the middle of the day when winds are high, so most of these have additional drag because of added holes or slots. These were covered with tape and then the tape was removed partially to match the wind conditions. The slots were also used to insert cyalume light sticks for use in night throwing. These boomerangs are for advanced throwers who know how to add coins, tape, etc. to optimize perfomance. Also, most of these require a hard throw, so they are not good boomerangs for children. You can add camber to the underside or cover holes or slots with tape or tape a coin to the upper surface of the dingle arm to make these easier to throw. This group is organized so that the easiest to throw boomerangs are at the top of the list.

Modified Polypropylene Wizard by Larry Ruhf
Item LRP02 ; Price: $4 ; Availability: 1 RH

This boomerang is an early version (1985?) of the popular Darnell proFly called the Wizard. The shape was modified into a V shape by Larry Ruhf for use in competition. Coins have been added with tape to both arms to make the boomerang more efficient in trash winds. You can remove or move the coin weights to suit your own throwing needs.

This boomerang is an early version (1985?) of the popular Darnell proFly called the Wizard. The shape was modified by Larry Ruhf for competition. There are about 25 holes drilled in the blades for aerodynamic drag. These holes were added to make the boomerang more efficient in trash winds. You can cover the holes with tape to suit your own throwing needs.

Modified Polypropylene Wizard by Larry Ruhf

Plastic Hook by Larry Ruhf
Item LRP23 ; Price: $4 ; Availability: 1 RH

This boomerang was made by Larry Ruhf in the mid 1980s. It is lighter weight and it has camber on the underside, so the flight range is only about 20 metres. To work properly, you will need to add dihedral and/or add coins to the upper surface of the dingle arm or remove more material to make it less heavy. This is not a good boomerang for a novice thrower.

Plastic Hook by Larry Ruhf
Item LRP21 ; Price: $3 ; Availability: 1 RH

This boomerang was made by Larry Ruhf in the mid 1980s for use in the Australian Round event. It is very heavy and it requires a strong throw and wind for a return. My recommendations are to modify it by removing thickness from the underside and/or adding camber. This is not a good boomerang for a novice thrower. Use this one as a blank to make your own high performance boomerang.
