Dennis Rex Huff

After graduation & a summer job with the Army, Dennis went into the Panama Canal apprenticeship program to train as a power plant operator. He completed his training in 1972 & worked in all of the Atlantic side power plants. Dennis & Peggy married in September 1970. They lived in Gatun & Coco Solo, where she was a stay-at-home mom to daughter Diana, born in 1971. In 1978, they moved to the Pacific side. A third career opportunity opened up for Dennis in 1979; he took a second apprenticeship, graduating as a tugboat captain. In 1986, he was selected for the pilot force & became a senior Panama Canal pilot after an 8-year training period. He retired from federal service in Dec 1999, & commutes to Panama to work as a pilot for the new Canal owners. Both were active in PCC recreational volleyball & paddled in the ocean-to-ocean cayuco races.

The Huffs moved to Merritt Island, FL from Panama in 1999. For Peggy, the transition from government servant to domestic servant was easy, although domestic slave is probably more appropriate - working for the government was easier than owning a home. They enjoy gardening (she swears some of the bushes on their property were there when the dinosaurs roamed Florida) & taking care of their "own" home. They ride their bicycles when they can find the time & enjoyed a 9-day bike & barge tour of the Netherlands. Their daughter, Diana, her husband Richard (a Port Canaveral pilot), & their four children; Peggy's mom; & sister Glen & her family, also live in Merritt Island. (See Peggy Hale for more update on Peggy & Dennis)
