This license plate is from the Panama Canal Zone. It is number 16913 for the year 1965. This plate is in new condition, but there is a bend in the upper right corner. This plate includes a penalyu mailing envelope from the license bureau with a note stating that sample license plates for 1965 and 1966 are no longer available. The plate was mailed to a customer in Canada who had requested a sample plate, but because no sample plates were available, the License Bureau sent a high number plate instead. My best guess is that no license plate numbers greater than 16913 were issued to vehicles in the Canal Zone because plates were usually issued in numerical order of the request. Many Zonians tried to get their request in early to get a low number. There are a few scratches and a bend in the upper right corner edge. It appears that it was painted with this bend, very strange. The envelope has a cut open side with some wear as expected.A rare plate from this former USA possession and in very nice overall condition.
