This item is a lot of 3 Pre-Columbian Neolithic stone tools and a clay message cylinder found in Central Panama. All of the stone tools were made from Basalt or a similar hard stone and they are in very nice condition with only a few minor faults, such as edge chips, etc. Most of the stone tools I found were celts with a wide blade, but these 3 pieces are different. They have a very narrow and sharp cutting edge on one end. I think that they were used as a wood working tool (chisel) or for cutting on bone?? They long shaft is perfect for grasping with your hand. The clay cylinder is very rare. It is the only one I have ever found. I think that most of these would deteriorate in the warm and damp climate of Panama. A professor at U. C. Berkley told me that the markings on the cylinder are some form of writing with information that was passed between regions by a messenger. It is complete but with surface deterioration as shown in the photos, so you have to be very careful handling it. I will pack it very carefully for shipping. All were found on the South East shore of a large island in Gatun Lake near the south end of the Gatun Locks. Zonians called this island "Navy Island", but the official name is Guarapo Island. Before the Panama Canal was constructed, this island was a tall hill on the banks of the Chagres River. All of these artifacts are surface finds. As a teen living in the town of Gatun, I visited Navy Island often to fish and camp. The wave action from the ships leaving Gatun Locks would wash against the steep hillside and erode the red clay soil to expose lithic artifacts. I collected these between 1966 and 1968. All of these artifacts were collected in the American Canal Zone prior to when the territory was ceded back to Panama in 1999. The approximate dimensions and weights are as follows:

Tool #1: Length = 176 mm ; Width = 30 mm ; Thickness = 20 mm ; Weight = 200 gm

Tool #2: Length = 103 mm ; Width = 22 mm ; Thickness = 20 mm ; Weight = 76 gm

Tool #3: Length = 78 mm ; Width = 19 mm ; Thickness = 10 mm ; Weight = 22 gm

Clay Cylinder: Length = 71 mm ; Diameter = 22 mm ; ; Weight = 40 gm
