This item is a Prehistoric Neolithic stone tool (stone ax or celt) found in New Guinea. This one was made out of a very dense Metamorphic stone called Basalt. The architecture on this celt resembles artifacts that I found while living in Panama. The celts from both cultures have a curved bifacial blade that was polished. The celts that I found in Panama were dated at 500 B.C. I did not have this celt dated, but stone tools were used in New Guinea before Europeans introduced metal blades, so they are at least 500 years old and are possibly much older.

This celt is in in very nice condition as shown in the photos. There is no major damage to the cutting edge.

The approximate dimensions and weight is as follows:

Celt #1 (A43): Length = 110 mm ; Width = 75 mm ; Thickness = 25 mm ; Weight = 272 gm
