This item is a pair of Prehistoric Neolithic stone tools (stone ax or celt) found in New Guinea. Both were made out of a very dense Metamorphic stone called Basalt. The architecture on these celts resembles artifacts that I found while living in Panama. The celts from both cultures have a curved biface blade that was polished. The celts that I found in Panama were dated at 500 B.C. I did not have these celts dated, but stone tools were used in New Guinea before European man introduced metal blades, so they are at least 500 years old and are probably much older. These celts are in very nice condition as shown in the photos. A45 has several chips on the cutting edge, but the blade is still functional. A46 has no major damage to the cutting edge. The approximate dimensions and weights are as follows: Celt #2: Length = 65 mm ; Width = 52 mm ; Thickness = 20 mm ; Weight = 102 gm |
