This item is a hardwood spear thrower from the North Central Desert region. These artifacts are sometimes called a Woomera or Atlatl. This spear thrower was probably made in the mid to late 1800s. There are similar spear throwers from this region that have a thin and wide bowl sort of like a coolamon integrated into a spear thrower. This one is unusual because the coolamon section is narrow and thick. Both sides of this artifact have longitudinal fluting along the entire length. This implies that it was made with stone tools. This spear thrower has a Spinifex handle with most of the Spinifex still attached. The peg or spur is not attached. There is no binding or Spinifex on that end. When I purchased it, the peg was held on with a rubber band. This spear thrower is in very nice condition. This woomera is marked with "H669" and "80" in white paint indicating that it was part of the famous W. H. Holt/Lord Alastair McAlpine collection. I purchased it in Perth in 1991 when that collection was being liquidated. |
