This Eskimo artifact was purchased from the Tom Pike Museum in Ohio. It came with a collection tag that says " From the Tom Pike Museum in Ohio. Collected in Alaska in the early 1900s. Bola - used for hunting water fowl. Made of braided sinew with 7 bone and ivory weights - Ptarmigan feather talisman ". There are seven bone segments ranging in size from 5.5 cm to 6,5 cm. The diameters average at approximately 1.5 cm. The bone segments are rounded and drilled at one end. Several of these bone segments appear to be dense marine mammal teeth (Walrus?). Each bone segment is tied onto a sinew cord and all cords are tied together with a central knot as shown in the photo below. There is a Ptarmigan feather integrated into the knot. This is an excellent example of an Eskimo bola and it is more than 100 years old and in excellent condition. It is truly a wonderful collectible that was housed in a museum collection for almost a century.

Length = 72 cm ; Weight = 90 gm
