This competition hook was made out of Fiberglas in the 1960s for use in the Australian Round event. The underside is smooth. The upper surface is roughly textured for improved performance. This rough texture kills laminar boundary layer formation and this eliminates the formation of recirculation bubbles by forcing the airflow into turbulence at the leading edges. The hook shape is similar to the Lewry hook. It is painted bright colors on the upper surface and Billy printed his name on the underside of the elbow. This boomerang is in very nice condition with light wear from use. I purchased this boomerang from Ben Ruhe in 1987.
Billy Knight was a competitor in the 1960s in Australia. The primary event was Australian Round, so he made boomerangs out of Fiberglas and other dense materials to obtain the range requirements of this event. He dropped out of the competition circuit before the organization of international competition, so he is not well known in the USA or Europe. Billy did not make boomerangs for the commercial market so examples of his boomerangs are rarely offered for sale. |
