This beautiful natural elbow is one of only two spalted natural elbows I have seen. Spalting is a process where light colored hardwoods are invaded by Fungi in parallel grains resulting in a beautiful contrasting grain pattern. Spalted woods are in high demand by woodworkers, but the strength of spalted wood is lower than with unaffected wood. Ray Rieser spent a lot of time hunting for spalted natural elbows and after carving the airfoils, he impregnated the wood with a high strength clear polymer. This boomerang is not only strong enough to throw, but it is a wonderful flyer with a flight range of 20+ metres. Initialed and dated 1985. This is perhaps one of the nicest boomerangs made by Ray Rieser, so it is a great collectible.

Specifications: Right Handed ; Tip-to-tip Span = 35 cm ; Weight = 47 gm

Ray Rieser was one of the hardest working administrators in the formative years of the United States Boomerang Association. Ray was USBA treasurer and the MHR newsletter editor and production manager. Ray was also a collector of both contemporary and antique boomerangs. He has one of the finest collections anywhere. Ray made very few boomerangs, but the ones that he made were fantastic. I have only two in my personal collection and they are not for sale at any price. Ray dropped out of the boomerang movement in the mid to late 1980s, but the work that he did was essential to the success of the USBA over the next two decades.
